Confirmed Shabbat UK activity

Alei Tzion

As part of the Shabbat UK project Alei Tzion will be hosting a Friday night dinner especially for Israelis and Ivrit speakers living in London together with members of the kehillah. This will take place on Friday 24th October (Parshat Noach) at 7.15pm. Spread the word to any Israeli friends, colleagues and acquaintances: a full three course meal for only £5. Belmont

Following the Shabbat morning service, Belmont will hold a celebratory lunch on ShabbatUK to honour the years Chatanim and N’Shei Chayil. All ages welcome. Kabbalat Shabbat at Belmont will be followed by authentic Friday evening meals at members’ homes throughout the community. Shabbat morning services will eb followed by a communal lunch for as many members as we can squeeze in to the Belmont Function Suite, with some special activities for younger members of our community. Brondesbury Park

On Friday night of Shabbat UK, Brondesbury Park will be holding a special service for the entire community, kicking off at 5.40pm with a children's sing along l'cha dodi. Members are encouraged to host friends or colleagues who may not have experienced a Shabbat dinner before. On Shabbat morning, the service will break for a mini kiddush and learning on the subject of Shabbat. Mincha will be followed by a giant communal Seudah Shlishit programme at shul (free, but again, please book here: https://myus.theus.org.uk/events/8995/communal-seudah-shlishit/), including children and youth programmes. Bushey & District

Bushey are providing (free) Shabbat lunch to the community, members and guests, after the Shabbat morning services. Book here: https://myus.theus.org.uk/events/8954/shabbat-uk-shabbat-lunch/. There will also be great speakers, engaging for adults and specifically for children there will be a separate track of activities run by madrichim.

Central Synagogue

Chigwell & Hainault

On Friday night, the Kabbalat Shabbat service will be followed by hosting by local families (30 – 40 people are hoped for in the rabbi’s garden, for instance). Still others will be served chicken soup at shul that night (no charge, but please book; see below). Young people are welcome throughout. On Shabbat morning there will be a number of different children’s services as well as youth participating in various elements of the main service, leyning included. Following services there will be a lunch (small cost) followed by talks, during which time a nursery and games area will occupy the hall next to the shul, which has been hired for the occasion. Older youth can supervise young kids, or join the youth club chaperoning adults. After mincha there will be a (free) cream tea, at which young people will also be welcome. Clayhall

On Shabbat UK, Clayhall is holding a special children’s service & 47 Club, and a topical discussion with Rabbi Wilson, followed by a spectacular Shabbat lunch, various fun afternoon activities, followed seudah shlishit and at the end of Shabbat, a musical havdalah, giving local youth a Shabbat to remember. Cockfosters & North Southgate

On the Monday prior to Shabbat UK, the children/youth will decorate the shul hall ‘Noah’s Ark style’ and will prepare besamim and candles using left-over etrogim. Children/youth will be involved with Challah make we are holding at Wolfson Hillel on Thursday 23rd from 2-4 and 7-9. CNSS will hold a Friday night dinner during which it is hoped that outside madrichim (tbc) will provide an activity during the evening as well as be part of the main event. On Shabbat morning there will be youth and children involved in the main services and there will also be separate services for them. On Shabbat afternoon there will be ‘clubs’ along the lines of regular Monday night sessions; also, children and youth will be involved with a seudah and the rabbi and rebbetzen will be taking a form of Avot Ubanim programme with the ideas of the young people. Edgware is hosting a tremendous Friday night dinner with the Chief Rabbi and a great big Shabbat lunch, both for the whole community. Specifically for young people “Motsa'ei Madness” will be amazing, a musical candle-lit havdalah to cap a tremendous Shabbat. Hampstead

Hampstead Garden Suburb

On Friday night there will be ‘Shabbat UK Tots’: HGSS mummies and children together for a musical experience and to enjoy crafts, food, fun and more in the Landy Gallery. After the Friday night service there will be a community dinner in the newly refurbished shul hall and on Shabbat morning, Rabbi Daniel Rowe (Aish) will run an explanatory service alongside the usual hashkama, Sephardi and main services. There will be children’s and youth services “for all children from babies up to teens”. Throughout Shabbat, there will be a coffee and cake corner and refreshments available also in the library. Shabbat lunch will be a smaller, quieter affair, hosted by shul members at home. The afternoon will be filled with activities and a light supper for pre-school children in the shul hall; and for primary school aged children, the older youth have come up with some great ideas and will be leading fun activities based on the parsha of Noach. Adults are invited to the home of Rabbi and Freda Kaplan for an insightful afternoon learning session. Seudah shlishit of coffee and cake precedes ma’ariv which will be capped by a communal Havdalah outside the shul with music and singing. Hendon

Hendon will enjoy a communal candle lighting on Friday night, followed by a special Kabbalat Shabbat service and a dinner accompanied by spectacular entertainment!
Shabbat morning will comprise of a joint Shacharit service, and then a kiddush breakfast to remember at 11am with musaf to follow this. Kingston

There is a double bat-mitzvah over Shabbat UK so services will engage and involve youth through direct participation in the main service, and specifically through a youth service to make the simcha more special and relevant. Luton

Luton plans for local families to host each other for Friday night dinner on Shabbat UK. On the following day there will be a buffet kiddush lunch following the Shabbat morning service and people will be able to socialise together for the whole of Shabbat at the shul. Mill Hill

Friday night of Shabbat UK at Mill Hill will see a communal dinner for all ages at the shul, following an inspiring kabbalat Shabbat service with a separate youth and kids dinner also on site. The following morning there will be a special Shabbat UK family service at MMK running alongside the regular minyan, and the whole community will unite for a special Shabbat UK communal kiddush. There will be madrich-led afternoon activities for youth of Year 2 and above. As Shabbat comes to an end, the community will celebrate Havdalah at Etz Chaim with tefilla and song.

New West End

New West End Synagogue will be taking part in The Great London Challa Make at Allianz Park Stadium in Hendon on the evening of Thursday 23 October. Shabbat itself will open at the shul with ‘Cuddle Up Shabbat’, a family friendly service to welcome the younger community to Shabbat UK, which will be followed by snacks and songs. This session will be led by kids and families team members. Slightly later there will be a Carlebach style, musical Friday night service for the whole community. Friday night kiddush follows davening with a challah, soup and dips (booking required). Shabbat morning will have a traditional choral service led by students of Imperial College and the very talented young chazan, Jonathan Garcia; all members and visitors welcome. A family service will run from 10.30am and is open to teens upwards; led by guest rabbi, Rabbi Saul Zneimer. Led by our enthusiastic kids' and youth team members, Club Sameach will run simultaneously, providing games and songs for two groups: kids from 0-5, together with their parents; and 6-13 year olds, attending by themselves. All children are welcome to come to an early kiddush for “chomp and shmooze”. And the whole community is invited to a communal kiddush. (Kiddushim require free booking please!) Lunch will consist of a Shabbat Lunch Crawl, going between member’s houses for main course and pudding! Pre booking essential for catering purposes. At 4.30pm Rabbi Saul Zneimer will give a Thought for the Day discussion in the house of one of the members of the community (mini crèche available). Pinner

Pinner shul has numerous dedicated youth activities for Shabbat UK: On Friday night there will be a a lovely communal and youth/children focused Friday night service, and afterwards numerous activities: a magician entertainment for the youth and children; a mocktail making bar; a bubble tea making bar; puzzles; dingbats; even a blindfolded obstacle course! And on Shabbat morning, after communal davening and leining, the youth will have separate musaf services for different ages, followed by a sushi kiddush; they will then rejoin the main shul for the chullent lunch kiddush and the children’s service will then go for their own lunch. Throughout the day there will be games, table tennis, as well as a children’s mincha, seuda shlishit, seuda and following maariv an inspirational havdalah and a melavah malka with ‘dinner party falafel bar’! St John’s Wood

For Shabbat UK, St. John’s Wood Synagogue will be holding an Ambassador Friday Night where local families will host each other to share in a real Shabbat experience. On Shabbat morning we will be running children services for all ages (3 to 16 years) at Naima JPS. After a sushi Kiddush, we will return to St John’s Wood Synagogue to share a HUGE communal Shabbat Lunch. Watford

Watford shul will be hosting a Friday night dinner for the whole community. On Shabbat day there will be a full programme of youth-focused activities, starting with a separate children’s service, followed by a (free!) children’s lunch with loads of ruach and singing, board games and learning.
